Long Week Ahead, Long Week Behind

Thu., Aug. 18, 2005 22:23:03
I have a long week ahead of me. Tomorrow morning I go to school to pick up my schedule then off to Seattle for jaw surgery. Next week will be a swollen mix of applesauce and smoothies.

The picture to the left is a "before shot" of my face. I hope to upload pictures of my swollen face and eventually my new, improved, healed face. All of the cuts are made through the mouth, so I won't have any scarring.

Okay, now the story about this week.

I got home from a weeklong biking trip in the San Juans to discover that I couldn't hop on a flight to Dallas to join my famliy like had been planned. The loads were too high to fly standby. My dad still had to go to work though, so I was left home alone for a few days.

Here's a profile.

Monday, August 15 was Elizabeth's birthday. I went over for the party, but was interrupted at about 21:53 with a text message saying that my server was down. I begged her for use of her laptop, which she reluctantly granted. Logged onto my desktop remotely so I could contact my host's support department.

Usually when the server is down, it's just a reboot or something short. Something I can live with. This time was different.

After 48 hours of downtime from a DDoS attack. I decided that it was worth signing up for a reseller hosting account with another provider. Maybe I can return one day to the freedom of my own server, but not this week. Not when it's not available.

It wasn't too bad transferring my clients to the new server. This DDoS attack didn't actually bring down my server, just it's internet connection. I found a way to access my server through another server connected to it via a LAN. Through multiple SSH connections, I was able to export websites, databases, and emails to the new server. At least I had backups this time.

Haywardwebdesign.com was the first site to come back online, not surprising considering it's the owner of the nameservers for all of the others. Of course, all of the sites were available very quickly on Comcast, but it wasn't until a couple hours ago that this site finally came through for me on my ISP, CenturyTel. All is well again.

P.S. I know this blog is extremily condensed, but I have learned from the past. If I try to hard--include too much detail--I run out of time or finger stamina to keep writing. I wanted to get this story in before my surgery, and I also want to get some sleep in tonight before my surgery. With that, I say goodnight, though I know most of you won't read this tonight.

I like how I didn't understand half of that. Oh well. You look really cute in the first pic, btw.
