Busy Day

Thu., Mar. 03, 2005 22:49:00
Today was hectic. School was busy, and then I had work and two meetings, not to mention a server outage.

It really started last night at about 2200 with the server outage. I figured it was a routine five minute outage, no biggie. At about noon today I finally recieved the text-message confirming that my server was available again. 14 hours down! That's horrendous! The last time I experienced downtime this long it was a result of my account being deleted. Luckily, this time it was easier to repair than that. At least on my end. The server was down because the company I'm with decided to do a kernal update so that each virtual server would receive its own HyperThreading Pentium 4. This would be great, but I'd rather stick with the processor being labeled as UML and have my server be up 24/7/365.

I got to math this morning and got to listen to the teacher explaining last night's lesson. I don't think I understood it anymore the second time than I did the first time. But it doesn't really matter right, it's just math. Then he annoucned we were having a quiz on the last couple homework assignments (*gasp*). The quiz wasn't too bad. It ended up being the first "partner" quiz of the year, meaning we worked together with the person sitting next to us. I sit next to Derek. I give him a lot of crap about saying stupid things, but he really saved me on that math test. To quote him, he "knew those assignments like the back of his hand." I lucked out with that one. The rest of the school day was too routine to waste typing about.

After school was my normal routine. Walk home, grab something to drink, get in the car and drive to work. Work was fairly standard too. I assembled a miniature switching power supply today. It's about an inch square and contains about 20 surface mount components. To put it all together, I take sodder paste and dab it on the contacts. Then I stick all of the components down on the contacts, lay it on the hotplate and shoot it with the hot-air gun. Melting metal with an air-gun is always fun.

I drove straight from work to a special scout meeting at Round Table Pizza. This is where my day gets interesting. When I got there, I locked the door and slipped the key in my right pocket. On my way in the door (50ft or so from where I parked), I remember that there's a hole in that pocket. I stuck my hand in pocket to check, and sure enough, the key had fallen through. Usually when that happens it'll just be caught in my pants, sock, or shoe, but I wasn't that lucky this time. I commenced the search. I still had about 10 minutes until the meeting started, so at least time was on my side. I retraced my steps and searched within about 15ft from everywhere I had walked. The ground was spotless, I couldn't believe it. If I had actually lost the key, I would really be screwed. Giving up, I walked back into the restaurant and informed the cashier about what had happened so he could keep his eye out for it. I guess time was the only thing on my side this time. After the meeting, I asked the people there if one of them could give me a ride home to get another key, and then a ride back to the pizza place again. Luckily, I received several helpful offers. Because my dad is out of town, I would have been pretty helpless if one of them didn't step up. My family only has two cars. I was supposed to leave this meething early, but at least I could leave. The issue worked out all right except for the fact that now I have to replace a $100 micro-chip key.

Because I didn't end up leaving the scout meeting early, I was about 40 minutes late to the ESAR board meeting. This didn't turn out to be much of problem. I still got to put in some input on issues that I felt would benefit the ESAR youth (my representative obligation). Luckily, after this meeting I drove home without any extraordinary events.

It's relaxing to have that long day finally over and be back on my computer. But while it is relaxing, my hands are getting tired of typing, so I think it's time to go. Hopefully I'll make this blogging stuff a regular habit. It's really a nice stress outlet when I have stressful days such as this.
